Definition of nouns and all types of nouns

Whatever you see around you, it has a name. Be a thing, person or place or even emotions.

So names in language are called nouns. 




 

Types of noun


Here is the list of important types of nouns:

Proper noun, common noun, abstract noun, collective noun, material noun, compound noun.


Common noun has no identity. We cannot recognise it without being specified. Examples:  Boy, country and book, chair, man etc. 


Proper noun

A noun that can easily be recognized, is called, proper noun.  Or in other words, Proper noun has an identity.

 Examples: Ali, Greece, Qur’an.

Every proper noun starts with a capital letter. 

 

Class work:

Change the following common nouns to proper and proper nouns to common noun. One has been done for you.

We live in a developing country.

We live in Pakistan.

·        I am reading a newspaper.

·        I think the girl is upset.

·        Sir teaches us English.

·        She gifted me a wrist watch.

·        I like talking to him.

 

Abstract noun is a naming word for feelings, emotions or ideas.

We cannot see or touch abstract nouns.  Examples: Joy, anger, disappointment etc. 


Practice


Change these words to abstract noun:

Wise, happy, slow, numb, mature, close,

Concrete noun: Things names are called concrete nouns. Concrete nouns have physical appearance. We can touch, smell and feel them.

Examples: Chair, book, pen etc.

Collective nouns: Collective noun is a group of things or persons or places which usually acts as singular noun.

Examples: Herd, flock, gang, army etc.

Mostly collective noun is treated is singular.

Our army fights for our protection.   


Compound nouns: 

Compound nouns are made of two or more words. 

Examples:

Sunlight, airport

Door bell, washing machine

Brother-in-law, long-distance

Compound nouns can be written in three ways:

Open

Closed 

And hyphenated 


Separately write common noun, proper noun, collective noun, abstract noun and material noun.

Bridge, hockey, witch, Prof.Rafiq, wisdom, city, happiness, Qur’an, time, friendship, Book, Flock,  humour, swarm, fat man, tennis, toy, board, sports, jury, frustration, rocks.
