Become fluent in English with the help of these two structures of simple past tense

 

Past continuous tense is used to describe actions that start taking place in past from a certain point of time and continued. Past continuous has unfinished sense of meanings.

Structure: (For he, she, it and singular subject)

Was / were

Subject      +was+        verb1st form +ing+ object

He                  was playing                   cricket.

She                was baking                     a cake.

It                    was raining                  in kohat.

 

Interrogative structure

FORMULA:

Was + subject          +verb +ing               +object

Was     he                    playing                        cricket?

 

Change the remaining sentences according to the above formula.

CHANGING INTO NEGATIVE:

FORMULA:

Subject                +was not+ verb +ing             object

He                                   was  not    playing     cricket.

FORMULA (WE,YOU,THEY and plural subject)

Subject                +were                  +verb+ing  +object.

We                        were                    having        dinner.

You                      were                    playing a   trick.

They                    were                     leaving      the country.

Men                     were                     hunting       the deer.

 INTERROGATIVE

FORMULA:

Were         +subject     +verb+ing  +object

Were          we                 having        dinner?

Change the remaining sentences into interrogative as per the formula.

 NEGATIVE:

FORMULA:

Subject                +were not +verb         +object

We                       were not  having       dinner.

Past continuous + conjunction + past indefinite

I was going home              when                         I saw her.                

 

She was cooking porridge  when suddenly a lizard fell in the sink.

 

While she was talking to her friend,               dad came in.

TO BE = Present

Mom was at home while I was at the market.
