Lesson Title: Understanding the Present Perfect Tense
Objective: By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand and use the present perfect tense correctly in English sentences.
What is the Present Perfect Tense?
The present perfect tense is a verb form used to talk about actions or events that happened at an unspecified time in the past, or actions that started in the past and continue into the present. It is formed using the auxiliary verb "have" (or "has" for the third-person singular) and the past participle of the main verb.
Structure of Present Perfect Tense:
Positive sentences:
- Subject + have/has + verb 3rd form
- Examples:
- I have seen that movie.
- She has visited Paris.
Negative sentences:
Subject + have/has + not + past participle (contracted as haven't/hasn't)
- Examples:
- They haven't finished their homework.
- He hasn't travelled abroad.
Interrogative Form: Have/Has + subject + past participle
- Examples:
- Have you ever tried sushi?
- Has she read this book?
- Examples:
Key Points to Remember:
Unspecified Time: The present perfect is used when the specific time of the action is not mentioned or is not important.
- Example: She has eaten lunch. (We don't know when she ate lunch; the focus is on the fact that it happened.)
Experience or Accomplishments: It's often used to talk about life experiences or achievements someone has had in their life.
- Example: I have visited Italy. (This indicates that the speaker has the experience of visiting Italy at some point in their life.)
Actions Started in the Past and Continue into the Present: When an action started in the past and continues to have relevance or impact on the present, we use the present perfect tense.
- Example: I have lived in this city for five years. (The action of living in the city started in the past and continues until now.)
Examples to Understand Usage:
Unspecified Time:
- She has studied Spanish. (At some point in the past, she studied Spanish.)
- They have seen that movie before. (They saw the movie at some undefined time in the past.)
Experience or Accomplishments:
- He has graduated from university. (He has the experience of completing his education at a university.)
- We have visited many countries. (We have the experience of traveling to multiple countries.)
Actions Started in the Past and Continue into the Present:
- She has worked here since 2010. (Her employment started in 2010 and is ongoing.)
- They have known each other for a long time. (Their acquaintance began in the past and continues until now.)
